Jacket Sleeve Jacket Length
Many things play into ill fitting garments (which we will touch on later), but the length of jacket sleeves and the length of the coat are arguably the most important.
You could have a brand new $3,000 sport coat, but if that sport coat doesn't have the right lengths it will look like it's 8-12 years old. Not what you want right? Of course not.
Over my years of working with fine clothing, I have noticed something that most guys do when they try on a sport coat or suit jacket- they put their arms forward like they are from The Walking Dead and comment how the sleeves are too short. Well, guys, do you walk around like a zombie? If you do, message me personally and we can figure something out for you, otherwise put your arms down! Most of the time your arms are at your side, so that is how you measure it. If you sit down and put your elbows on the table or you're having a drink, yes, your sleeve will pull up a little and more cuff will show- that is just fine. If you lengthened your sleeve according to you drinking or walking like a zombie, then your arms by your side will be a disappearing act for your thumbs- not ideal. Your shirt cuff should be anywhere from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch longer than your coat sleeve. That, is up to you. Side note- make sure your shirt sleeve isn't too long and that is the reason your cuff is showing. Focus on the break of the wrist, your shirt goes slightly past and your jacket hits right at or above it.
Sleeves are something that can be altered, usually a tailor will charge $20-$40 depending. If your sleeves look like this (above), get them shortened. If your sleeves are too short and you are showing 1+ inch, get them lengthened. Sometimes, there isn't fabric to lengthen, in which case you just need a new jacket.
Traditionally they (the baby boomers) say to put your hands by your side and if the jacket falls into that middle or last crease of the fingers, it's perfect. Well, at some point in time weren't baggy high waisted triple reversed pleated pants in style? Things change, fashion changes. This doesn't mean you have to go to the extremes every year on the new trends, it just means to not wear really old items that clearly were in a different decade.
Today the length of jacket is much shorter, which I assume you know already. If you put your arms down, ideally you want the jacket to hit the middle of your palm. Some jackets are even shorter for the real fashion forward people.
The length of a jacket can be altered as well, however it sometimes can be expensive and also no guarantees it will turn out perfect. I would suggest buying a new jacket. Also something to think about when shortening the length of a jacket two inches, this will throw off the button stance. The buttons will seem too low, which may or may not look odd. I would again- suggest a new jacket.
